Riverlea Contractors Ltd is an agricultural contracting company operated out of Riverlea, South Taranaki.
Riverlea Contractors was first started by John Silson, and his neighbour, Don Luond, in 1985 as they started to do bulk silage and baling work for their neighbours. While the operation was originally meant to be “just a hobby and just for the neighbours”, the business continued to grow and in 1996 Riverlea Contractors was registered as a limited company. Initially, two 90’s series Fiat tractors, a New Holland baler and a Gallagher harvester made up the full Riverlea Contractors fleet, now, thirty years on the fleet has grown to include 16 New Holland tractors, two Claas Jaguar self-propelled harvesters, four trucks, a JCB telehandler and all the implements to provide a full range of ag services.
Mike Silson, John’s son started driving at age 14 and now is one of two directors of the company. These days he runs the company alongside his wife Charlie, who works as the main office administer. While John now lives in Katikati with his wife Betty, he still keeps a keen eye on the business and, as a director is still involved in all the major decision making at Riverlea.
